Cataract Surgery Q & A

Is cataract surgery the best treatment for cataracts?

Cataract removal is the gold standard treatment for cataracts. While certain behaviors like wearing sunglasses consistently can help prevent cataract progression, nothing can remove cataracts except surgery.

With cataract removal, Dr. Omphroy takes the cataract out of your eye and places a new eye lens — known as an intraocular lens (IOL) — to restore your eyesight. This means you might not have to wear glasses or contacts after cataract surgery.

How does cataract surgery work?

At Omphroy Eye Care, Dr. Omphroy offers the option of laser cataract surgery using the CATALYS™ Precision Laser System. You’ll receive eye drops to numb your eye and may also take an oral sedative.

With the CATALYST, Dr. Omphroy creates incisions and softens the eye lens to prepare it for removal. He then uses the state-of-the-art WHITESTAR SIGNATURE® PRO for phacoemulsification.

In the phacoemulsification process, Dr. Omphroy uses an ultrasonic handpiece to safely remove the eye lens. He replaces removed eye fluid with a saline solution that maintains your eye shape.

Dr. Omphroy then places a new IOL to restore your vision.

What are the different types of IOLs used in cataract surgery?

IOLs can correct a variety of vision problems, depending on the lens.

Monofocal

TECNIS® monofocal IOLs correct your vision at one distance, typically restoring distance vision. You’ll still need glasses for close-up viewing if you have a monofocal lens.

Multifocal

Multifocal lenses, or premium lenses, fix vision at far distances and also improve focus and close-up vision. They don’t restore intermediate vision.

This means that with a multifocal lens, it’s still sometimes difficult to view a tablet or phone.

This type of IOL may cause issues with glare and halos.

Extended depth of focus

Extended depth of focus lenses like the TECNIS Symfony® are the most advanced premium lens option. These lenses use breakthrough technology to restore near, intermediate, and distance vision. This often allows you to see well without glasses at all distances.

Toric lenses

TECNIS toric lenses correct astigmatism. You can choose monofocal or premium toric lenses based on your vision needs.

Before your cataract surgery, Dr. Omphroy uses the ALADDIN Biometer for the most accurate calculations so he can find the best IOL for you.

How long does it take to recover from cataract surgery?

It can take as little as a few days to get back to your usual routines. Depending on your situation and eye health, there might be an adjustment period lasting anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months. You can generally expect full healing within eight weeks.

At Omphroy Eye Care, Dr. Omphroy uses the most technologically advanced protocols and equipment to restore your vision and minimize the need for glasses. Learn more about your options by calling the office or scheduling an appointment online today.
