Styes, also know as Hordeolum/Chalazion, is an acute or chronic lump on the upper or lower eyelid associated with swelling, pain, tenderness and erythema. This occurs because of blockage of the meibomian orifice leading to a back up of oil secretions. This condition needs to be differentiated from preseptal cellulitis, pyogenic granuloma, and most importantly sebaceous gland carcinoma which can be deadly. Your ophthalmologist is trained to medically and surgically treat all these conditions and restore you eyelid to its natural appearance.
